Cascara tea: the hidden gem of the coffee world
Cascara tea is a unique and fragrant drink made from the dried pulp of the coffee berry that surrounds the coffee bean. Although coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world, Cascara tea has remained relatively unknown despite being a delicious and sustainable choice. Exceptional in its taste, Cascara definitely deserves a place in your everyday life.
What is Cascara Tea?
The word cascara means "husk" or "peel" in Spanish. When the coffee beans (the stone of the coffee berry) are harvested, they are separated from the fruit that envelops them. Traditionally, coffee berry pulp was considered a by-product of coffee production and was often thrown away or used as fertilizer. However, in coffee-growing regions, tea has long been made from the pulp of dried coffee beans.
Cascara tea is often described as a cross between tea and coffee, with hints of sweet fruitiness. It tastes like dried berries, raisins or gooseberries and has a soft, earthy undertone. Although Cascara tea contains less caffeine than a regular cup of coffee, it still provides a mild energy boost.
By using the pulp of coffee berries that would otherwise go to waste, Cascara tea contributes to reducing waste in the coffee industry. It's a more sustainable way to enjoy the fruits of the coffee plant, paying attention to more than just the beans.
